Twisted Comfort Food

DSC02073
Love that caramelization!
I love lamb. I mean, I really love lamb. Probably 90% of all my food posts on Instagram are of some sort of lamb dish. It's just so delicious and kinda fancy pants. Especially when I pair it with some red wine sauce...

Scent Nirvana

DSC02083

I'm not much for perfume. I usually put on a scented lotion (because, really what lotions aren't scented) and am always wary of mixing scents for fear of assaulting others' nostrils. I've only had two "signature scents" and they are both Bath & Body Works related (creamy coconut in high school, and sweet pea in college). But I've felt it's been time for a more mature signature, something womanly but not elderly.

Phillip Lim Steal

DSC02061
Sure, opening gifts one by one on Christmas morning (or in my case, afternoon) while your loved ones stare and wait for a feigned (or not) gesture of appreciation can be an overall enjoyable experience. Being with loved ones and just getting anything above that is a blessing, I think we can all agree. And just to add some butter onto that piece of sourdough, my gifts were actually pretty awesome this year. My boyfriend was ballsy enough to give this shoeaholic a pair of gold accented ankle booties. He also bought me a sweater I pinned to my "My Style" board…not knowing I already had it. Long distance relationships. I guess not memorizing each others' wardrobes comes with the territory.

Regardless of how awesome Christmas can be, I have three words for you: After Christmas Sales.

THE bag

Here it is. The perfect bag. THE bag. The Twin bag. It's sleek, simple, classic, and beautiful - just how I like it. That, and multiple inner compartments always tug at my heart strings.

Now, if only I wasn't a law student indebted up the wazoo…

Cold and Healthy

DSC02039

Polar Vortex weather doesn't often lend itself well to breakfast options like smoothies. Temperatures low enough to induce even the most stubborn of campuses to announce a snow day usually calls for oatmeal, Cream of Wheat, or a stack of pancakes. (Let it be known that I actually did spoil myself with some peanut butter pancakes on Sunday - in celebration of National Peanut Butter Day. If you didn't already celebrate, there's no harm in some belated festivities.)

But today, I decided to do what the unexpected. Really, for the sake of my health. After being cooped up in my apartment all day (as a result of the aforementioned snow day) I miraculously ended up with a ton of super huge, freshly baked, chocolate chip fleur de sel cookies. Nevermind how it happened, I'm now just more concerned with how quickly the pile has dwindled.

Hence, the fruit smoothie despite the cold. It pretty much ended up a hodgepodge of everything I had. Pom, mixed berries, greens, yogurt… and I threw in a packet of Vega One protein powder. I've made it my new mission to find a neutral-flavored protein powder I actually like. The strawberry, chocolate, or vanilla thing is just not for me. Artificial flavorings should be reserved for sour watermelon slices and the like.

DSC02040

I found a good review on Vega One and decided honor it with the first test in this case study. I opted for the "natural" non-flavor instead of the vanilla chai. The review for the chai flavor was good, but that seemed a little too aggressive for the fruit smoothies I'd typically make.

The natural flavor was good. Since the protein powder is plant-based, the "green" taste is certainly noticeable however not overpowering. It added a slight sweetness to the otherwise tart smoothie, and a bit of grittiness as well. The powder didn't dissolve as much as I would have preferred but it definitely wasn't off-putting. Like the greenish taste, it's just noticeable. All-in-all, I'd definitely buy it again. Plus, the protein (15g) to calorie count (123 cal) ration was best compared to other protein options (at least at my local Whole Foods Market Heaven).

Juice and Soba Noodles

DSC01992

If you guys haven't seen the "Shit People in LA Say" you need to head to the YouTube right now. "Shit" came out a while back, during the whole trend of making "Shit [whoever] in [wherever] Say" videos. Obviously this one hit close to home. (Especially the "Are you leaving?…bitch." part.) And, of course, the part about juicing. Classic Californians jumping on the next health craze bandwagon. Damn you nutrients, you done got me again.

Here it is. The juice of the day (equally juiced apple not pictured). I bought some carrots earlier in the week that looked like they were dunked in some TGRI ooze and figured they'd be perfect for juicing, so I put them to work (with aforementioned apple, oranges, parsley, kale, 1 celery stalk, and smidgen of lemon). Pretty tasty and healthy way to start the day if I do say so myself. And I just did, so… yeah…

DSC02006

Back to the point, to which I have yet to allude. If you're ever in LA and feeling a bit lonely…perhaps you haven't put the remote control down in a while or you just CAN'T.STOP.PINNING…and you want to have an actual conversation with a real life person take the following steps:

1. Make some juice.
2. Put your juice in a bottle (preferably glass or, better yet, a mason jar)
3. Go to a shopping center.
4. Walk around with juice in hand.

I guarantee someone will come up to you and ask you some variant of "Ohmahgahd! Where'd you buy your juice?! I'm really into juicing right now."

This exact scenario happened to my friend and me when we perused the Grove. I couldn't even help my friend decide on a f*&#in top because we kept getting questions about this damn juice. Note: We bought our juice from Joan's on Third. I highly recommend the restaurant/marketplace. I highly urge you not to buy the green juice. Unless you feel like drinking a bottle of ginger.

On another note, I felt compelled to make a soba noodle and peanut dressing dish recently featured on Cupcakes & Cashmere. She mentioned it quickly became a staple so I figured it'd be good. It was easy, quick, and healthy but I can't say it was my favorite. I felt the recipe was missing something, mostly vegetables, so I added about two teaspoons of Sriracha, carrots, bell pepper, cucumber, grape tomatoes, scallions, and roasted chicken breast.

Recipe Note: If you plan to store leftovers, keep the excess sauce! It dries out as it sits in the fridge.

Happy cooking!

Baby, it's f*ckin cold outside

DSC01950

Blah blah, it's been a while, blah blah. TRY THIS RECIPE! Caramel Chai. I don't know if you guys have tried the dirty chai tea lattes from Starbucks but they are amazing. I don't even like Starbucks (I'm admittedly a coffee snob), but the dirty chai tea lattes are amazing and actually keep me awake. I saw this recipe on Not Without Salt and had to try it. It's really easy and even better than the ones from Starbucks, especially since I added my own shots of Blue Bottle coffee espresso.

DSC01946

I also rediscovered one of the best kitchen staples ever, especially for busy worker bees or students–the rotisserie chicken. Whole Foods has great ones, I got the herbes de provence flavor and it was fantastic. I'd all but forgotten how convenient rotisserie chickens actually are. Super healthy salads and sandwiches in no time.

For instance, I made a sandwich with hummus and fresh vegetables. Made another sandwich with fresh veggies, goat cheese, and fig jam. The salad below was so, so good. I had some grapefruit so I made grapefruit vinaigrette with agave and added the segments into the salad. Feta cheese would've been a great addition, but I didn't have any one hand. Made for a lower calorie meal though so I can't argue with that.

DSC01942

Btw, it's been so. freaking. cold. in Indiana lately. I cannot wait to get back to California on Sunday. I can drink my chai lattes there in shorts.

I promise this ends well…

DSC01933

Intellect currently stands at 'Do Not Disturb', and today has been a lot bit of a struggle. I'm finally back from what now seems like a surreal compilation of my favorite things. All the fantastic impressions from the previous week in beautiful Los Angeles mutated into seemingly distant memories by the swift kick of some brat's foot to the back of my uncomfortably upright chair and the bleak realization that I was on my way back to reality (aka school). My to do list elongates by the hour with yet another and another task I conveniently forgot was due before the week's end. Well, suck-it-the-fuck-up you say? You're right, and I'm trying. Let me briefly recap my fabulous week in an attempt to lighten the mood upon which I have shat.

DSC01928

With all the excitement of reuniting with my one and only (oh yeah, I'm in a long distance relationship. It sucks balls, but we make it work.), said one and only surprised me with a bouquet of my favorite flowers (hydrangeas) and date night at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. We dined on prime rib, wine, and sour gummy worms, rested our laurels in the best seats in the most beautiful building in LA, and listened to the LA Philharmonic. He knows what's up.

Random Fact of the Day: The Walt Disney Concert Hall was designed by Mr. Frank Gehry after a rose, his wife's favorite flower. Initially, Lady Disney hated the design, vowing the family name would not be represented by so hideous a building. Mr. Gehry, quite the salesman, scheduled a meeting with Lady Disney. At this meeting, Mr. Gehry's only companion was a single rose. He asked for a glass of water and a pair of scissors then explained, as he cut the bulb from its stem, his wife's affinity for this particular flower. Mr. Gehry then gently set the severed bulb into the water, where it morphed into a form resembling what is now the Concert Hall.

DSC01926

I rounded out the week imbibing happy hour specials, devouring baked goods at Proof, paradoxically laughing on the Haunted Hayride, gaining weight via homemade Filipino food, and relaxing with my favorite person. All in all, it was practically everything I wanted, which makes coming back to Indiana that much more difficult.

Luckily, I was welcomed home with a rather sweet surprise. A very thoughtful person in my life, who knows (pretty extensively) my adoration for school time, sent me a surprise package of macarons. Not pictured here, since I could not wait to try one, is the honey lavender flavor. Devine. Enough floral scent without being overpowering and just enough sweetness. Plus, the package came with a 10% off coupon on what will be my first purchase from Macaron Cafe. So, I guess you could say I'll be eating my feelings until my next trip back to paradise.

California Love

IMG_2950

Color me excited. I'm going back to Cali; escaping this wretched place, if only for a short while. Having grown up in southern California, I tended to take for granted all of the sensational things The Golden State has to offer. Only after leaving and spending an extended amount of time "enjoying" the seasons did I grow to truly appreciate the paradise I left behind. Just the predictability in weather is ample reason for my affection. No need to check the weather every morning to make certain I don't end up walking home in the rain or wearing a dress in 20 degree weather. [The sun can be very deceiving, the times it's actually out.] No need to EVER wear earmuffs or gloves, god forbid both (with a scarf). No fear of winds so cold they draw tears like the freshest of onions. The bliss of having events to attend, restaurants to try, things to see! The lack of judgment eyes when "dressed up" on a "regular" day. I could go on forever, but I'll spare you for now. Moral of the story: my time away has solidified the fact that no matter where I am, my heart resides in California.

Whole Wheat Walnut Oat Bread

IMG_3998

Long name, but delicious. I found this recipe in a Cooking Light magazine long ago but always come back to it. I gave some to a friend and he was "surprised by how flavorful it is." Gotta love surprises. Especially pleasant ones.

IMG_3997

Regardless of how aesthetically pleasing as well as flavorful this bread can be, it's surprisingly easy to accomplish. I do have to say, there are a number of steps involved–pulsing the oats in a food processor, soaking the oats, etc.–however, no stage was particularly difficult. The recipe yields two large loaves, and they freeze splendidly. Just wrap tightly with plastic wrap and aluminum foil then seal in a freezer bag. Unwrap and heat in the oven, slice off a chunk, add Nutella, and enjoy your awesome life.

IMG_4007

I featured this grainy goodness in a black-pepper crusted turkey sandwich with spinach, fig jam, and a touch of dijon mustard.

Random fail of the day
I currently work at a legal aid clinic as a student legal intern. Part of my job involves conducting meetings with clients. As you can readily expect, professionalism is vital in this particular facet of my job. Turns out, I'm a STUPID and recorded the meeting date in my calendar incorrectly. Forty-five minutes late. There's more. Apparently, in the decade my professor has supervised students in this capacity, he has never had this happen before. Sometimes you just gotta make a name for yourself. And I do it by breaking records.
