Review: Georgetown Cupcakes

DSC02431
Basically, Georgetown Cupcakes is amazing and you all need to go. The first time I had it was in Georgetown and I didn't know they opened up a new branch in LA until a few weeks ago. I can't believe how many delicious cupcakes I've missed out on. It's just...wrong.

I can't say I've enjoyed the actual process of acquiring these cupcakes, but I can say it was totally worth it. In Georgetown, I had to wait in line forever. This time, I had to wait in traffic forever. At least I had the opportunity to eat my feelings afterwards, and with such decadent options!

I decided to take this opportunity to create a little tasting party for my boyfriend and myself. Let's recap!

General review: The cupcakes were all incredibly light and fluffy, not too sweet or overpowering and Georgetown seems to have a mastery of balancing flavors and textures. Georgetown seems to be a great example of perfecting the basics first, then digressing into mouthwatering realms of signature creations. The cream cheese frosting is smooth, airy, and just slightly tart. I could eat it with a spoon all on its own, really.

Most Creatively DeliciousToffee Crunch
The reason why I went on a Thursday. It's basically a Heath Bar flavored cupcake and it's beautiful. The crumbled toffee pieces baked into the batter sort of melt throughout and give the cupcake the perfect amount of sweetness with a sight hint of salt. The frosting is toffee-infused vanilla topped with more toffee. I loved the balance amongst the sweet, slightly salty, crunchy, creamy, and fluffy elements.

Cupcake of My Dreams: Coconut
Of course I had to get the coconut! I love coconut flavored anything and this really hit the spot. The cupcake was intensely permeated with coconut but wasn't at all too strong. Paired with the slight tart from the vanilla cream cheese frosting and the texture from the shaved coconut on top made for an exceptional case of perfection through simplicity.

Most Disappointing: Vanilla & Chocolate
My boyfriend's request. He's a simpler eater than I, however I was excited to try out their version of a classic. The classic Madagascar bourbon vanilla cupcake was beautifully made, much like the others. The problem was the whipped Callebaut chocolate frosting. "Whipped" my gluteus. I'm unsure if it's because we didn't eat these right away, but the frosting was more like fudge. As if they took a massive piece of fudge and stuck it on top of the cupcake. Way too densely thick and couldn't at all hold up to either the tenderness or delicate flavor of its vanilla counterpart.

Best Surprise: Cherry Blossom
A testament to the gorgeous cherry blossom trees in Washington, DC that are currently in bloom. I wasn't sure what to expect from this one. I wasn't sure if it was going to be sweet or tart, but it ended up tasting much like a strawberry cupcake. SO good! I couldn't get enough! The cupcake was their classic Madagascar bourbon vanilla but baked with fresh cherry chunks throughout the batter. Holy. SO GOOD! Then they topped it off with cherry infused cream cheese frosting. Damn it, I wish I had one right now.

Before I visited and tried the rest of the flavors I thought the Toffee Crunch would certainly be my favorite. The uniqueness of the cupcake intrigued me so much, but apparently not enough to keep my attention from straying towards coconut and cherry pastures.

My general consensus: Unless you want a huge chunk of dark chocolate fudge, don't get anything with the whipped Callebaut chocolate frosting on it. And everything else basically indicates that heaven is actually a cupcake shop.

I'm definitely going to experiment and try to replicate these. I'll let you know how I do!
But if it ends up terrible, I won't say a word.
